Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia.

An official of Diamond Bank Plc, Ademola Oshodi, told a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Monday that he managed the bank account of Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia numbered 0032091183 domiciled in the bank.

Oshodi told the court that he regularly visited Ofiili-Ajumogobia’s chamber on the premises of the Federal High Court on Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos, to collect huge cash sums for onward deposit into the judge’s account.

The banker said whenever the money was above the lawful threshold that could be deposited into the judge’s account, he split it into two, deposited a portion into Ofili-Ajumogobia’s account and the remaining portion into his own personal account.

He explained that he would subsequently transfer the money from his personal account into the judge’s account.

He added that, at a time, he had to help the judge get a Bureau de Change operator named, Abah Said, who helped her to convert naira into US dollars whenever the judge was not comfortable with the normal mode of transaction.

Oshodi said this on Monday when he appeared as a prosecution witness before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, where Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia was arraigned alongside Chief Godwin Obla (SAN) for alleged bribery and unlawful enrichment.

The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, on Monday expressed her readiness to support the wives of governors to tackle challenges facing women and children in their states.

She gave the assurance when Southern Governors` Wives Forum led by its Chairperson, Mrs Nkechi Okorocha, paid her a courtesy visit at the State House, Abuja on Monday.

Mrs Buhari, who said she supported the creation of the southern governors` wives forum, noted that it would ensure unity and development among womenfolk.

She, therefore, promised to work closely with them to combat domestic violence, encourage girl child education as well as fight maternal and child mortality through her NGO, the “Future Assured Initiative.“

She said the forum, initiated in Jan. 2016, was aimed at addressing the socio-economic and health challenges of women and children in Southern Nigeria.

The wife of the President praised the wives of southern governors for their determination to improve the condition of living of women and children in their states.

“I am really proud of you’’, Mrs Buhari said.

Mrs Okorocha told State House Correspondents that they came to brief Mrs Buhari on their achievements so far and strategise on how to address domestic violence and challenges of girl-child education in the region.

Mrs Okorocha was accompanied by the 17 southern governors’ wives including the wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, wife of Abia Governor, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu and wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, among others.

Customs CG, Hameed Ali.

The Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, retired Col. Hameed Ali, on Monday said the service generated more than N600 billion for the last quarter of 2016.

Ali said this while addressing newsmen on the sidelines of the 136th meeting of the Joint Tax Board in Abuja.

He said Customs contributed N903 billion to the nation’s coffers in 2015.

According to him, the drop is due to the fluctuating foreign exchange rates and the ban on importation of more items by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

There are 41 items banned from importation; among them are soap and cosmetics, tomatoes/tomato pastes, plywood boards and panels, wooden doors, rice, cement, margarine and toothpicks.

Ali said “the service made more than N600 billion in the last quarter of 2016.

“I will not say it regrets but the CBN should have liaised with the Service before placing ban on some of the items.’’

Ali said the collaboration between the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Nigeria Immigration Service would boost income and shift the nation’s view from oil.

“With the declining revenue from the oil industry, our economy is dangerously exposed to the uncertainties in the oil sector.

“We must therefore look beyond oil and focus attention on tax which is internally generated.

“As revenue generating agencies, working together will put us squarely on the driving seat of Nigeria’s vehicle towards an economic model that is inward looking and self sustaining.

He said the application of modern tools to check corruption among the agencies would minimise leakages.

Ali said a review and expansion of excise duties were being looked into for locally manufactured items, to expand government’s tax base to generate more revenue.

Mr Eyitayo Jegede.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has rejected the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State.

The party described the outcome of the election as declared by the Chief Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Abdul-Ganiyu Ambali, as a “charade and not the true reflection of the will of the people of Ondo State”.

Mr. Ambali had Sunday declared the All Progressives Congress candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, winner of the election.

Mr. Akeredolu polled 244, 842, to defeat the PDP candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, who rallied 150, 380 votes to place second in the race.

The spokesperson of the PDP, Dayo Adeyeye, on Monday said the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, aided the APC to rig the election.

He said INEC has now “graduated from inconclusive Elections as seen in Kogi, Bayelsa, Osun, FCT, Imo, Nassarawa and some other previous By-Elections in the Country to ‘Advanced Election Rigging’, as in the case of Edo and Ondo States Gubernatorial Elections”.

Mr. Adeyeye, in a statement, said “it is common knowledge that the APC Agents openly bought votes of the electorates in the full glare of security operatives who did nothing to prevent such dastardly violation of the Electoral Law.

“It is not surprising that the electorates in Ondo state became so vulnerable to the corruptive influence of the APC because of the hash economic situation in the Country inflicted on Nigerians by the APC Administration which have indeed made all Nigerians virtually beggars in their own Country”.

Mr. Adeyeye said PDP had persistently called for the postponement of the Election before Saturday, for at least two weeks to enable the Party Campaign and prepare properly for the Election.

He said the party’s request followed the setback orchestrated by “Justice Okon Abang and the charlatans in PDP who allowed themselves to be used by the APC to destroy our chances in the Ondo State Election.

“The actions of INEC in collaboration with the APC led Administration left us no time to campaign and sell our Candidate and Party Manifesto to the electorates in Ondo State.

“Our persistent call for the postponement of the Election which was backed and supported by more than 20 other political parties were all rejected by INEC which were acting the script of the APC.

“It was a carefully planned and well-orchestrated strategy to rig the Election well in advance by preventing the PDP from planning and campaigning for the Election. The APC has hereby introduced a new formula of rigging Election in Nigeria.

“In view of the fact that the Election was blatantly manipulated from the beginning to the end to favour the APC, we vehemently reject the results of the November 26, 2016 Gubernatorial Election in Ondo State,” he said.

He also said Saturday’s election and all actions leading to it fell short of laid down principles guiding conduct of elections in Nigeria.

“We have instructed our Candidate and the Ondo State Chapter of our Party to proceed to the Tribunal to challenge the Outcome of the Election.
“We call on the Judiciary to redeem Nigeria’s image on this matter as we request for the total Cancellation of the Election in Ondo State,” the party said.

Pandemonium broke out at Agbogidi Motor Park, close to the Onitsha head bridge, along the Benin-Asaba-Onitsha expressway, following a gun duel between a police patrol team and suspected kidnappers.

According to Vanguard, the police officers, who stormed the park based on intelligence report, on Friday, killed  three suspected kidnappers who dressed in pastors outfit.

Passengers and drivers  at the motor park at the time of the incident, ran to avoid being hit by stray bullets in the gun battle which lasted for over 10 minutes.

The suspects drove into a bar in the park in a  Toyota Corolla car allegedly waiting for their target, said to be a United Kingdom-based native of Asaba coming home for Christmas.

Sunday Vanguard gathered that a mole in the family of the UK-based Nigerian had given out information about him to the gang.

A dependable source, who pleaded anonymity, said the hoodlums were patiently waiting at the bar for a signal from their informant on the appropriate time to strike when they ran out of luck.

According to the source, the suspected kidnappers, on sighting the police patrol team, opened fire with spontaneous response from the police officers.

Showing the  corpses of the suspects at about 8pm on Friday to journalists, Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ibrahim Zanna, said his men acted on credible information, disclosing that his men were on the trail of the mole who reportedly fled the scene before he could be fished out by the policemen.

Zanna said the  vehicle of the suspects,  one AK 47 rifle, one pump action gun, one locally made pistol with 19 rounds of 7.6mm, eight live cartridges, one expended cartridge and church aprons were recovered.

Noting that some brave persons at the motor park assisted the police during the operation, he called on the general public to always provide the police with credible information that could lead to the tracking down of hoodlums.

Jimoh Ibrahim.

Former gubernatorial aspirant of the People's Democratic Party, Jimoh Ibrahim who emerged under the faction of Ali Modu Sheriff has mocked Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko ahead of today's poll.

Jimoh Ibrahim, sacked governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, speaking in a video has said that today’s election will hold and that the reason he went into the legal battle to rule Ondo was to stop Ondo State Governor, Segun Mimiko, from helping Eyitayo Jegede to win.

He went further to say that Mimiko was just wasting his time and that he deliberately locked him up and wasted his time for three weeks only to destabilised him.

“Mimiko is just wasting his time. There’s nothing he can do.
“I decided deliberately lock him up and waste his time for three weeks…took him out the state, destabilised him. “Now I have released him…two days to the election. He is dancing naked,” Ibrahim said full of smiles.

Meanwhile, there are reports of a long-term feud between Mimiko and Ibrahim who all graduated from the University of Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Human rights lawyer and activist, Fred Agbaje, is dead.

Mr. Agbaje died in London on Friday, a source close to the family revealed.

The cause of his death is yet to be disclosed.

His colleague and fellow human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, who also confirmed Mr. Agbaje’s passing, described him a thoroughbred lawyer and a man of principle.

“He got nominated for SAN (Senior Advocate of Nigeria) three times but failed to make the final list, and he told me he would not lobby anybody for that title,” Mr. Adegboruwa said.

“He was a highly detribalised Nigerian, not many knew he was from Edo State. The bar has lost an icon, his place in Nigeria’s judiciary can never be filled.”

Before his death, Mr. Agbaje served as the in-house lawyer for Ben Bruce’s Silverbird Group, among other positions he held.

Popular Singer, D'Banj in Fresh Trouble as He Gets Dragged to Court... See Details

D'Banj

One of Nigeria's most famous singers, D'Banj, has found himself in a new wave of controversy as he gets dragged before the law.

D'banj is one of Nigeria's most popular singers who is also considered to be one of the most successful in the industry.

The singer has reportedly found himself wrapped in a new controversy as he gets charged to court,

According to Pulse, the singer has been sued by technology company, MindHub for owing over N100, 000, 000 naira.

In a document exclusively released to Pulse on November 16, 2016, it appears that the Kokomaster signed a memorandum of understanding with the technology company on October 19, 2012, for the promotion of a concert organised by his media house, D'Kings Men Media LTD.

MindHub invested the sum of $500,000 and N20 Million for the organisation of concerts.

Apparently, the contract states that the 35-year-old would be personally liable for the payment of the sums of money in the event of D'Kings Media failure to pay.

When Dkings Men media failed to pay back, Mindhub Technologies called for the repayment from Dbanj.

Out of the loan, D'banj who recently won the Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Art (BEFFTA) entertainment icon of the year award, reportedly paid only $260,000 and N8,600,000 leaving the outstanding sum of $240,000 and N6,400,000.

The technology company has now taken the issue up legally. They've made it known that all efforts made by them for him to pay proved abortive.

In his bid to pay the aforementioned outstanding sums to the Mindhub, Dbanj issued a Skye Bank cheque No. 10000039 on December 29, 2013, in the sum of $240,000 in the name of Henry Ojogho, Mindhub’s Vice Chairman. The cheque was returned unpaid on presentation by the said Henry Ojogho, who sought to know from Skye Bank the reason for returning the cheque. Skye Bank notified Chief Henry Ojogho that it was due to lack of funds in the Dbanj’s account.

The cheques was also endorsed “DAR” by the Bank. D'banj issued another GT Bank cheque No.00000046 dated January 20, 2014, in the sum of N15, 000,000 in favour of Mindhub.

The cheque was also returned unpaid on presentation.

Consequently, MindHub filed a suit in 2015 against Dbanj to recover the sums of money.

The case is currently before Justice Oyebanjo of the High Court of Lagos State, Ikeja Division and would be due for hearing on December 9, 2016.

According to Pulse, the singer's representative has been reached out ot, but has so far not replied.

More details later.

Cameroonian Footballer, Samuel Eto'o Might Be Heading to Jail for 10 Years
Samuel Eto'o

A four-time African Footballer of the Year, Samuel Eto'o stands accused of failing to reveal his full income to the authorities, which could land him a long spell behind bars if found guilty

Samuel Eto’o could face a jail sentence of over 10 years, according to respected Spanish newspaper El Pais, which reports that a Spanish prosecutor is pursuing the striker for alleged tax fraud while at Barcelona.

The former Cameroon international striker, 35, who is currently playing for Antalyaspor in Turkey, has been accused of fraud that could amount up to €3.46 million.

Eto’o is alleged to have been accused of failing to declare his sponsorship revenues, including those from a major boot manufacturer, to the authorities when filing his tax returns between 2006 and 2009.

If true, this would mean he avoided paying the top tax rate, which at the time stood at 45 per cent.

There are four charges levelled against him, El Pais claims, which could amount to 10 and a half years behind bars and a fine of €14m.

Panic as Man Storms Bank Smashing Glass Doors and Car Windshields... His Reason Will Shock You
*Photo used for illustrative purpose*

A man has shocked many after he stormed a bank in Ogun State and began destroying cars and bank doors.

The man shocked many after he stormed a bank and began smashing car windshields and glass doors in Sango-Ota branch of a first generation bank. The incident happened in Ogun State.

The man claimed that God instructed him to engage in the violent conduct. He was later identified as Oyediran Oladipupo.

Security men had to step in and bring him under control as he was prevented from barging into the bank to unleash mayhem.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident caused panic among bank customers who had thought it was armed robbers.

Policemen from Sango Area Command stormed the bank and promptly arrested him. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident and said: “A man who was later identified as Oyediran Oladipupo was said to have gone to the bank (name withheld) at Temidire in Sango-Ota this afternoon.

“He was reported to have started smashing cars’ windshields and the bank’s glass doors. The management of the bank had called on policemen from the nearby Sango Police Station and the suspect was promptly arrested.

“When interrogated, the man said, ‘It’s God that sent me to do what I did.'”

Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the suspect would be charged to court for malicious damage after investigation.

This government won’t succumb to blackmail, Fashola tells DISCOs

Babatunde Fashola, minister of power, works and housing, says the current administration will not succumb to alleged blackmail by electricity distribution companies (DISCOs).

In a statement issued by Hakeem Bello, his media aide, the minister said the companies were threatening the government over outstanding debts, which ministries, departments and agencies (MDA), were owing them.

Fashola alleged that the DISCOs had so far failed to provide details of such debts for verification, insisting that only pay verified debts would be paid.

He also advised the DISCOs to pursue the debt issue in their capacities as distribution companies and not “under the aegis of any association”, pointing out that although the constitution guaranteed freedom of association, the privatisation exercise that led to the transfer of the distribution assets of power was not held between the government and any association, but 11 individual companies.

The minister, who spoke at the opening session of the 10th monthly meeting with power sector operators in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, expressed disappointment that the companies had placed advertorials under the aegis of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distribution Companies.

Describing the advertorials titled, ‘MDA debts not yet paid’ with other headlines such as ‘MDA pay your debts so that we can serve Nigerians better’, as a blackmail against the federal government, Fashola said: “Let me say without any equivocation that government will not succumb to this blackmail, at least not the federal government of Nigeria.”

He said in their adverts, they failed to tell Nigerians of various meetings seeking solution to the debt problem, and that at the last monthly meeting with them in Sokoto an online platform was provided by government to enable them submit the details of the debts with ease to which none of the DISCOs had complied by the agreed deadline.

“I think that advert should have told the Nigerian public that at our meeting in Sokoto, we provided an online platform where we asked all the DISCOs to submit details of their debts to that platform so that we can verify it,” he said.

“I think that advert should have told Nigerians how many DISCOshave complied with that instruction. That advert should also have told Nigerians how much was owed and to which DISCO.

“It is important to remind Nigerians that the privatisation exercise did not vest the DISCOs in an association instead it was vested in 11 individual companies.

“So while I respect the rights of association; indeed our Constitution allows freedom of association. But the Nigerian government will not pay its debts estimated to be about N100 Billion under the aegis of an association. That is not how to resolve debts. Every DISCO knows how much power it supplied. Debts are not calculated by estimates. It is either N100Billion or less than N100Billion but not an estimate.”

Also faulting the DISCOs on the grounds that the advertorials contained no information as to how many of them had supplied details of their audited account for the last three years, Fashola said the information would be more meaningful for Nigerians to know how many DISCOs were complying with the regulations set by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

“That advert should also have told the Nigerian Public how many DISCOs have gone to court to frustrate the attempt by NERC to hold them to their contracts so that they can pay the GenCos who have been sacrificing, the Gas producers, who have not received any money but have continued to act patriotically,” he said.

“It lies with those who work in the private sector as well, it lies with every Nigerian. If the DISCOs want payment, we will pay but you have to prove that the debt is owed and you have to prove the quantum.”

While stating that he would respond on behalf of government to provide the other side of the information, any time the DISCOsgo to the public without giving them the full information, Fashola added: “Let them do whatever they think is appropriate within the framework of their contract in order to get on with this job".

Judge withdraws from suit seeking Amaechi, Onu’s sack
Amaechi, Onu.

Justice John Tsoho of Abuja Federal High Court on Tuesday withdrew from the suit against the Minister of Transport, Chibuike Amaechi and his Science and Technology counterpart, Ogbonnaya Onu over their alleged attempt to bribe judges.

The Kingdom Human Right Foundation is seeking an order of mandamus compelling the removal and prosecution of Amaechi and Onu after two Justice of the Supreme Court, Justices John Inyang Okoro and Sylvester Ngwuta had on October 19 and 21 respectively claimed the ministers attempted to induce them to influence some governorship election petition judgments.

Justice Tsoho, who is presiding over the trial of Justice Ngwuta on allegations of money laundering and multiple passports filed by the federal government, cited the fact that the criminal case, being the substantive matter of the dispute, is currently before him as the reason for his withdrawal.

He consequently returned the case to the Chief Justice of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta for re-assignment.

The applicant, Barr Kingdom Okere, had asked the court to issue an order of mandamus compelling the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately arrest, investigate and prosecute Amaechi and Onu based on the allegations by the embattled Justices.

Okere also wants an order of mandamus compelling President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack the two ministers or cause them to resign from office without further delay on the grounds of public interest, public morality, and to enable the DSS and EFCC carry out their statutory responsibility.

The lawyer also wants the court to declare that the refusal of Buhari to sack the two ministers “is grievous enough to conclude that the anti corruption fight is window-dressing, witch-hunt, selective, vindictive, malicious, and prosecuted with gross disregard to the rule of law.”

Court declines making restraining order on Patience Jonathan’s $15.5m
Patience Jonathan.

Justice Mohammed Idris of a Federal High Court Lagos, on Tuesday, refused to restrain a brother judge from taking steps in relation to the frozen $15.5m allegedly belonging to Patience Jonathan.

Idris declined an application by counsel for the former first lady, Mr. Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), who sought an order to restrain Justice Babs Kuewumi from taking further steps on the frozen sum.

Adedipe had urged the court to stop Kuewumi from making any forfeiture orders, in respect of the said sum, which was frozen by the EFCC, until the determination of an interlocutory application on the subject.

It will be recalled that Jonathan had instituted a fundamental rights suit against the EFCC, claiming the sum of $200m as damages for inconveniences suffered.
In her suit, she had joined the EFCC, Skye Bank plc, and a former aide to ex president Goodluck Jonathan, Warampo Dudafa as respondents.

Also joined in the suit are four companies namely: Pluto Property Ltd, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Ltd, Transocean company Ltd and Globus Integrated Service Ltd.

It will be recalled also that Dudafa was charged alongside the four companies before Justice Kuewumi, on 15 counts of money laundering.

Representatives of the four companies, which the EFCC claimed were used by Dudafa to launder the money, had all pleaded guilty to the offences.

The $15.5m is the same sum which the former first lady claimed belongs to her as sole signatory to the accounts of the companies.

When the case was called on Tuesday, Justice Idris acknowledged a letter from counsel representing Skye Bank, Mr. Lanre Ogunlesi, stating that he was indisposed and could not attend the court.

The judge added that since Ogunlesi has requested for a new date to enable him appear in court, the hearing of the application on notice can not proceed.

Meanwhile, before the court could adjourned the case, Adedipe urged the judge to direct the EFCC not to tamper with the subject matter of the case pending the hearing of the interlocutory application.

In response, Counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, urged the court to dismiss the application on the grounds that the accounts which housed the money had been frozen.

He urged the court to dismiss the application with a “wave of hand”; adding that there was already an order of court convicting four defendants for warehousing proceeds of crime.

In a short ruling, Justice Idris held that he could not go into the merits or demerits of the interlocutory application, until it is moved.

He ordered accelerated hearing of the case and said that he could not make any order that will be prejudicial to the outcome of the main suit.

He consequently, adjourned the case to December 7 for hearing of the main application.

In her suit, Jonathan is urging the court to issue an order discharging the freezing order, and restraining the EFCC and it’s agent from further placing a freezing order on the said accounts.

I was wealthy before I entered politics, Saraki tells BBC

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has told the BBC Hausa service that he acquired 95% of his wealth before he entered politics.

He is currently under investigation by the authorities on allegations of falsely declaring assets when he was governor of Kwara State.

Saraki acknowledged that there was corruption in the country, but said his wealth was a result of coming from a blessed family and hard work.

He said he was confident that he would be cleared of the charges against him and he would continue to serve in public office.
The senator also said he had not evaded tax – an accusation highlighted in the Panama Papers.

His wife, Toyin, also appeared in those documents accused of registering a company offshore to buy a London property.

“Based on legal advice the company was set up because they were acquiring an asset and it was advised at that time and that’s how it was set up to the best of our knowledge.

It was not a company that was set up by ourselves; it was set up by a legal firm and under a legal firm as far as to the best of our knowledge no law was being broken,” Saraki told the London-base broadcast outfit.

This feat is believed to be a clear signal of what to expect in terms of continuous infrastructural upgrade in the state.

However, some residents of the state had initially expressed fears that Governor Obaseki being a technocrat might be too busy in his office dealing with financial bureaucracy.

By Dele Momodu.

I have been reading about the rising profile of our former President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and wish to state without equivocation that no one should rule him out of the 2019 presidential race. I first hinted this possibility about two months ago and wish to reiterate that Nigerians should prepare for the shock that awaits us. The story of Donald Trump should bring us back to our senses.

Nothing is impossible. The second coming of Goodluck Jonathan may be so far-fetched or even belong in those categories of impossibilities but I wish to plead with our government and my fellow citizens not to rule it out. As one of those who made our modest and humble contributions to the coming of this Buhari government, I’m pleading with trepidation.

Jonathan’s popularity is rising not because of anything he has done to atone the sins that must have led to his waterloo but as a result of what our "Change Government" has failed or refused to do.

The obsession of our government with going all out after Jonathan is the main reason the Otuoke man is beginning to smell like roses after the odoriferous position he landed himself last week. Only if our government had succeeded in maintaining the economy it met, Nigerians would have been ready to enter fire with Buhari. But there are just too many unresolved problems and challenges. The excuses that Jonathan and company left this peculiar mess behind has refused to fly. The groans might not be loud enough to reverberate all the way to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, as of now, but trust me it may become deafening, sooner than later. I do not care if men and women of power dismiss my submission with a wave of the hand but they should mark my word, there is a thickening conspiracy in the clouds. It would be a shame if we inadvertently play into the hands of those hovering and ready to pounce on Buhari.

I read about “persecution complex” long ago and I understand how it works. If you beat your own child so ruthlessly as if you want to kill him, the tilt of public opinion would always go against you. Many would wonder why you want to kill your own child. In our anger, let us pick our fights. There is too much tension in the land. I would be delighted if anyone could educate and convince me that Nigeria has gained much more than we’ve lost to this war of attrition. If we haven’t, we may need to retrace our steps urgently.

The BBC reported on Friday how Jonathan caused a stir in Sokoto State during his visit to the state to pay his respects to Ibrahim Dasuki, the late former Sultan of Sokoto. According to the report, Jonathan was received by a large crowd of admirers, some holding banners bearing the words “Come Back Baba Jonathan”. The same voices that chanted “Sai Baba” and “Jonathan Must Go” are now fiddling with the tunes of the possibility of a Jonathan to stage a comeback. Here lies the irony of political triumph and the paradox of high expectations.

The euphoria and momentum that saw the exit of Jonathan and the emergence of the Buhari change administration has since begun to wane following the inability of the new government to hit the ground running with the tenacity of a government in a hurry!

There are many who believe that the poor management of the ensuing economic recession didn’t help matters. Suddenly, Nigerians who had high hopes and voted massively for change are now caught in a limbo between confusion and uncertainty. As it stands today, the average Nigerian is confronted with the reality of an economic recession they never planned for; a situation they did not experience under the Jonathan administration and under previous governments.

Many of President Buhari’s supporters are worried that the humongous goodwill that engineered the Buhari change mantra is now being frittered away at the speed of light. The unfolding plot has now thrown up former President Jonathan as a new protagonist in Nigeria’s theatre of the absurd. For many of us who are ardent students of history, we have since learnt that nothing is impossible in the game called politics. Will history repeat itself again? Time is pregnant with answers!

Chief Femi Fani- Kayode.

Former spokesperson to ex- President Goodluck Jonathan campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani- Kayode said Saturday that him and others would join hands with the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu to collectively bring down those he termed, their collective enemies.

In a statement, Fani- Kayode who extolled the qualities of Kanu, said that he is not just a combination of Owelle Nnamdi Azikwe and Dim Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu: but a combination of Azikwe, Ojukwu and Major Kaduna Nzeogwu all rolled into one.

According to Fani- Kayode, Kanu who loves the Igbos, serves as a rallying point for Igbo nationalism, the fight for self-determination of the people of the east and the establishment of the sovereign state of Biafra.

He said, “And when that time comes we shall stand shoulder to shoulder with men like who is the leader of IPOB a Nnamdi Kanu and face down our collective enemies.” In a statement titled, “the Heart and Soul of Nnamdi Kanu, Chief Fani- Kayode said, “In my essay titled “Head Bloodied But Not Bowed And The Ascension Of President-Elect Donald J. Trump” (Part 1) I wrote the following: “When I went to visit the great and brilliant freedom fighter, Nnamdi Kanu, who is the leader of IPOB and easily the most courageous, powerful and credible Igbo leader in Nigeria today in his cell we had a very instructive and long discussion.

“I had never met Nnamdi before and I was amazed at his depth of knowledge, his immense courage and his deep convictions.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the man is going places and in him the Igbo have an Ojukwu and a Nnamdi Azikiwe all rolled into one. He is destined for greatness”.

“Apparantly my words have created quite a stir amongst those who believe that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu cannot be mentioned in the same breath as Azikiwe or Ojukwu, both of whom, in my view, are also great men.

“Yet despite their reservations I believe that we must give honor to whom it is due. Consequently I have no regrets for what I have said.

“Those that are upset at the fact that I spoke highly of the IPOB leader are misguided and, worst still, they lack vision, foresight and insight.

“They not only lack the ability to perceive individuals and events accurately but they also lack the gift of discermment. They may see the man but they cannot assess or recognise the spirit that is in him and that motivates him.
“Worse of all they are suffering from good old fashioned envy and they have been afflicted with the worst form of ignorance.

“Most of them have never even met Kanu let alone know him. I sat next to him for three solid hours in the most challenging and difficult circumstances.

“We discussed our respective views about Nigeria, our collective history, the suffering and marginalisation of our respective people, the Nigerian civil war, the reptilian and violent nature of the Nigerian state, the present dispensation, the Buhari government and the way forward.

“I have associated with, met and worked with many men of influence and power since I entered the combustible fray of politics thirty years ago but this one was different.

“This was a man that had what I would describe as a Mahatma Ghandi-like quality. That is to say he is one that is prepared to sacrifice everything and anything for his beliefs, his people and his cause.

“Like the great Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace I have no doubt that if he deemed it necessary he would go as far as to sacrifice his very life in the struggle for freedom and independence for his Igbo people from the Nigerian state and from our internal colonial masters and for the establishment of his beloved Biafra.

“Not all may agree with him on that course but they must respect his determination, passion and courage. “Very few Nigerian leaders have that level of selflessness and commitment to any cause and, simply put, I admire it.

“I looked deeply into his eyes as we spoke and I touched and weighed his soul. “I can tell you, without any fear of contradiction, that he is a profoundly good man who loves his Igbo people deeply.

“He is also well-educated and widely-read and he is a formidable intellectual. “We may not have agreed on everything but I can tell you this much: we share an aversion to the spread of radical Islam and terror in Nigeria and indeed throughout the world.

“We also share deep concerns about the oppression of our people by the state, the vicious persecution and desperate attempt to silence all the voices of the opposition in our country, the marginalisation and suppression of the good people and ethnic nationalities of the south and the Middle Belt, the implementation of a plainly racist and apartheid-like agenda by our government, the regular and consistent practice of genocide by our security forces, the rise in power and increasing callousness and brutality of the Fulani miltias and herdsmen in our midst, the not so hidden agenda to Islamise our nation and violate the secularity of our state, the violation of court orders, the brazen intimidation of the Judiciary and the resort to the most barbarous and hideous form of gestapo tactics, tyranny and human rights abuses by the Buhari administration.

“I can also tell you that he feels and shares the pain of the Igbo and he yearns for their liberation and emanciption from an increasingly hostile and oppressive Nigerian state.

“He is not a politician in the true sense of the word but rather a freedom fighter and a charissmatic leader who has managed to inspire millions of Igbo youth all over the world to once again have faith in themselves and their collective cause and aspirations. In my view that is a good thing.

“I can also tell you this: he is a man of great faith and conviction and his rise to prominence is not ordinary but instead prophetic.

“He cannot be destroyed or silenced by any government or man born of woman because the Lord is with him and He is using him. He is using him to say and do the things that many believe but that are too scared to say or do.

“Other leaders have had their time in the past and now this is his. He is paying a very heavy price right now for what God will use him for in the future.

“I recognise that fact and I sincerely hope and pray that his Igbo people will come to appreciate him and do so as well.

“Very few leaders can or would be willing to take the pain and make the kind of sacrifice that this man is making today.

“I am a very cautious and circumspect person and it takes me a while to warm to people or for them to win my confidence. Yet this case was different.

“Nnamdi and I, rather like Che Guevera and Fidel Castro at the beginning of the Cuban revolution, connected immediately and he won my trust, respect and admiration. “If there is anyone that can truly build the much needed bridge between the south-west, the south-south and the south-east it is Nnamdi Kanu.

“This is because he is pragmatic and sincere. It is because he is respectful and accomodating of alternative points of view and dissenting opinions and he speaks from a position of knowledge and strength.

It ibecause he is very proud of his Igbo heritage and he would never betray his people or prostitute his principles. “The truth is that he is not just a combination of Owelle Nnamdi Azikwe and Dim Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu: he is a combination of Azikwe, Ojukwu AND Major Kaduna Nzeogwu all rolled into one.

“The fire of revolution and the yearning for fundamental and equitable change burns in his blood and resides in his bones.

“He has spoken up for, defended and fought for the preservation and dignity of his people just as those other three leaders did in the past at different times in our history.

“He also serves as a rallying point for Igbo nationalism, the fight for self-determination of the people of the east and the establishment of the sovereign state of Biafra.

“His love, remarkable courage and sheer passion for his people and their cause is boundless and unfathomable.

“The Igbo is blessed to have him as one of the most respected and reverred leaders in our entire history as a nation.

“They would do well to appreciate him more, pray for him, stand up for him, line up behind him and insist that the government honors the numerous court orders that have granted him bail and release him from prison.

“Why? Because he bleeds and suffers for their collective cause and he is sacrificing all to remove their shame and lift their pain.

“What a man he is. What a mighty spirit. What a beautiful soul. What a braveheart.

“Permit me to conclude this contribution with the following observations. “All over the world today the concept of political correctness has been discredited and rejected. Consequently right-wing nationalist and ultra-nationalist groups and political parties are rising up and regaining credibility and power.

“In the United Kingdom we have the Nick Farage’s of this world and his UKIP whose magnificent efforts resulted in Brexit. In France we have the Marie Le Pen’s and her National Front. In Hungary we have the Viktor Orban’s and his Fidesz party.

“In the United States of America we have the Donald Trump’s and his new and redefined Republican party. “We also have plain-speaking and honest men like Michael Flynn, who has just been appointed as Trump’s National Security Advisor.

“Political parties with a similar ideology and that are led by equally strong-willed, focused and charissmatic figures are also making great waves and slowly gaining more power and relevance in Italy, Germany, Austria, Holland, Greece, Belgium, Hungary, Russia, the Phillipines, Israel and indeed all over the world.

“Thankfully Nigeria has not been left out. We have men like Nnamdi Kanu in the east, Ganiyu Adams in the west, Asari Dokubo in the Niger Delta and others from elsewhere who believe passionately in the restructuring of the Federation, the redefinition of the Nigerian state, the right of self-determination for their respective people and the expression of power, pride, self-respect and dignity for their various ethnic nationalities.

“Freedom beckons whilst the wind of change is blowing across the world and no-one can stop it.

“I thank God for that and I also thank Him for the millions of men of courage, strength and vision that have joined the fray. “Whatever happens in Nigeria and whatever may come our way, one thing remains clear: an idea whose time has come cannot be successfully resisted. Today may belong to our oppressors but tomorrow belongs to us.

“At the appointed time we shall rise up to where we belong as a people and we shall free ourselves from the demonic shackles and satanic chains that have have been placed upon us by our collective tormentors.

“And when that time comes we shall stand shoulder to shoulder with men like Nnamdi Kanu and face down our collective enemies.

“The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob shall rise to our defence and the Lord of Hosts, the Ancient of Days, the God of the Armies of Israel and He who holds the universe together by the power of His word shall lift us up to where we belong.”

The House of Representatives has offered explanations in defense of its decision to buy exotic cars for its 360 members.

This happened on Thursday following public outcry over the decision in the face of the country’s economic recession.

The statement stated that lawmakers must have a means of mobility while carrying out oversight duties over Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government.

The House will spend at least N3.6bn across 24 months to complete payment for the exotic vehicles supplied by the Kaduna-based Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited.

Reps Defend Car Purchase, Cite Mobility As Necessity

According to reports, as of Monday, the house had already taken delivery of 28 units of Peugeot 508 series from the firm in the first batch of 50 cars.

By January 2017, a total of 360 units of the exotic automobile would have been delivered by the company.

Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Jonathan Gaza, while defending the procurement of the cars on Thursday, stated that recession would not stop lawmakers from performing their legislative duties.

House Of Reps Defend Exotic Cars Purchase Despite Recession

Hon Gaza

He argued that in a recession, both the executive and legislative arms of government were expected to work even harder to find urgent solutions to challenges facing the country.

Gaza noted that while working during recession, members were not expected to trek to the premises of the MDAs for oversight duties.

He affirmed:

“In a recession, we will all put on our thinking caps.

“We are working; these are committees’ cars and they are not the personal property of members.

“When you came here today, how did you come? Did you walk down to this place (National Assembly) from your house?

“If a member is going to visit an agency, will he trek there?

“We need materials, computers, stationery, cars; these are all for work.”

When asked whether the National Assembly would approve Buhari’s $29.96bn loan request, Gaza responded that discussions were ongoing between the two sides.

The lawmaker, however, stated no conclusions had yet been reached.

Hon. Gaza also declined to comment on whether the government had begun disbursement of funds for the constituency projects of lawmakers.

In the N6.06trn 2016 budget, constituency projects of senators and reps members are worth N100bn.

Reports say the refusal of the government to fund the projects is reported to be one of the major reasons behind the poor relationship between Buhari and the National Assembly.

Hon Gaza, when pressed for a response on the issue said:

“We don’t release money for constituency projects. Our work is to pass the budget and we passed the 2016 budget.

“It is the responsibility of the executive to release funds for projects.

“Also, the money is not paid into our pockets, we don’t touch it.”
